Answer: Option D — Sikandar Lodi
Detailed Solution
The Moth ki Masjid, in south Delhi, was built in about 1505 during the reign of Sultan Sikandar Lodi (1489-1517), by his wazir (minister), Miyan Bhuwa (also written Miyan Bhoiya).
About the mosque:
- It stands in the area now called Masjid Moth, near South Extension in south Delhi.
- It is regarded as one of the finest mosques of the Lodi period.
- It has a prayer hall with five arched openings and three domes, built on a raised platform.
- It is decorated with carved red sandstone, fine plaster work and coloured tiles in some places.
- It marks a stage in the development of mosque design between the Tughlaq and the Mughal styles.
The legend of the name:
- "Moth" is a kind of lentil.
- According to a popular story, Sikandar Lodi once picked up a grain of moth from the floor of a mosque and gave it to his wazir.
- The wazir planted it, and the crop multiplied over the years.
- With the money earned from the harvests, he built this mosque, which came to be called the "Moth ki Masjid" (Mosque of the Lentil).
About Sikandar Lodi:
- He was the son and successor of Bahlol Lodi.
- He was the most capable ruler of the Lodi dynasty.
- He was a patron of learning and wrote Persian poetry.
Lodi architecture:
- The Lodi period produced many tombs and mosques in Delhi, especially in the area now called the Lodi Gardens.
- These include the tomb of Sikandar Lodi, the Bara Gumbad and the Shish Gumbad.
- Lodi buildings often have domes on high drums, and decoration with coloured glazed tiles.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Bahlol Lodi was the founder of the dynasty.
- ✗Ibrahim Lodi was the last Lodi Sultan.
- ✗Firoz Shah Tughlaq ruled in the 14th century.
