Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala

Detailed Solution

The Napier Museum is located in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), the capital of Kerala.

About the Napier Museum:

  • It was established in 1855 as a museum by the Maharaja of Travancore, and the present building was completed in 1880.
  • It was named after Lord Francis Napier, the Governor of the Madras Presidency from 1866 to 1872.
  • It was designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm, the consulting architect to the Government of Madras.

Its architecture combines the Indo-Saracenic style with the traditional Kerala style, with gabled roofs, pointed arches, decorative woodwork and colourful brick patterns. It also has a natural air-conditioning system.

It houses a rare collection of archaeological and historic objects, such as bronze idols, ancient ornaments, a temple chariot, ivory carvings, coins, musical instruments and Kerala costumes.

The museum complex also includes:

  • Sree Chithra Art Gallery: has paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, Nicholas Roerich and Svetoslav Roerich, as well as Indian, Chinese and Japanese art, and miniature paintings.
  • The Natural History Museum.
  • The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo: one of the oldest zoos in India, founded in 1857.

About Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906):

  • He was born at Kilimanoor in Travancore.
  • He was famous for painting Hindu gods and goddesses and scenes from the epics in a realistic, European style, using oil paints.
  • He set up a printing press in Mumbai (later Lonavala) to make cheap prints of his paintings, which made them very popular across India.

Other attractions of Thiruvananthapuram:

  • Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
  • Kuthira Malika Palace Museum.
  • Kovalam Beach.
  • Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), ISRO, and the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station, where India's first rocket was launched in 1963.

About R. F. Chisholm:

He also designed the Senate House of the University of Madras, the Lawrence Asylum and the Presidency College building in Chennai.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Chennai has the Government Museum (Egmore).
  • ✗Mumbai has the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.
  • ✗Bengaluru has the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum.
