Answer: Option D — Delhi
Detailed Solution
Safdarjung's Tomb is a garden tomb located in New Delhi, on Lodhi Road.
About Safdarjung's Tomb:
- It is the tomb of Mirza Muqim Abul Mansur Khan, known as "Safdarjung", who was the Nawab of Awadh and the Prime Minister (wazir) of the Mughal Emperor Ahmad Shah Bahadur.
- It was built in 1754 by his son, Shuja-ud-Daula, the next Nawab of Awadh.
- It is built of red and buff sandstone with white marble, in the late Mughal style.
- It is set in the middle of a large "charbagh" (a garden divided into four parts by water channels and paths), like Humayun's Tomb and the Taj Mahal.
- It has a central dome, four corner towers (chhatris) and a raised platform.
- It is often called the "last flicker in the lamp of Mughal architecture", because it was one of the last great garden tombs built in the Mughal style, at a time when the empire was declining.
- The complex includes a mosque, a madrasa and pavilions such as the "Moti Mahal", "Jangli Mahal" and "Badshah Pasand".
- It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
- The nearby Safdarjung Airport and Safdarjung Hospital are named after the area.
About Safdarjung:
- He was a Persian noble from Nishapur (in present-day Iran), and the nephew and son-in-law of Saadat Khan Burhan-ul-Mulk, the founder of the Awadh dynasty.
- He became the Nawab of Awadh in 1739.
Other tombs of Delhi:
- Humayun's Tomb: built by his widow Bega Begum and completed in about 1570; the first garden tomb in the Indian subcontinent; UNESCO World Heritage Site (1993).
- Lodi Gardens: tombs of Muhammad Shah (Sayyid dynasty) and Sikandar Lodi.
- Tomb of Iltutmish in the Qutub complex.
- Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khanan's Tomb: restored in 2020.
- Tomb of Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq at Tughlaqabad.
