Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Agra

Detailed Solution

Chini-ka-Rauza ("China Tomb") is a funerary monument in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, on the eastern bank of the Yamuna river.

About Chini-ka-Rauza:

  • It is the tomb of Allama Afzal Khan Mullah Shukrullah Shirazi, a Persian scholar and poet who served as the Prime Minister (Diwan or wazir) of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.
  • It was built during his lifetime and completed around 1639; he died in 1639 in Lahore, and his body was brought to Agra for burial.

It is famous as the first building in India to be decorated on a large scale with glazed tiles, a Persian technique known as "kashi" or "chini" work. This is how it got its name ("chini" refers to the glazed, porcelain-like tiles).

The glazed tiles in bright colours such as blue, green, yellow and orange once covered the entire exterior, with floral and geometric patterns and calligraphy.

It has a single, large, bulbous dome.

Much of the tilework has been lost over time, but the monument is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Other monuments in Agra:

Taj Mahal: built by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal (completed in about 1653). UNESCO World Heritage Site (1983).

Agra Fort: built mainly by Akbar. UNESCO World Heritage Site (1983).

Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb: built by Nur Jahan for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. It is called the "Baby Taj" and is the first Mughal building built entirely of white marble with "pietra dura" (inlay) work. It lies near Chini-ka-Rauza.

Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra.

Mehtab Bagh.

Fatehpur Sikri (about 35 km from Agra).

Other Mughal monuments with tilework:

Wazir Khan Mosque, Lahore (Pakistan): famous for its kashi tile work.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Delhi has Humayun's Tomb and Safdarjung's Tomb.
  • ✗Lahore has the Wazir Khan Mosque and Jahangir's Tomb.
  • ✗Aurangabad has the Bibi ka Maqbara.

Quick tip

Remember: Chini-ka-Rauza = Agra (tomb of Afzal Khan Shirazi, Shah Jahan's minister; glazed "kashi" tiles); Itimad-ud-Daulah = "Baby Taj", Agra; Bibi ka Maqbara = Aurangabad.
