Answer: Option C — Rajasthan
Detailed Solution
The Vijay Stambh ("Tower of Victory") stands inside Chittorgarh Fort in the Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan.
About the Vijay Stambh:
- It was built by Rana Kumbha (Maharana Kumbhakarna) of Mewar.
- It commemorates his victory over the combined armies of Malwa (under Sultan Mahmud Khalji) and Gujarat in about 1440.
- It was built between about 1448 and 1458.
It is about 37 metres (122 feet) high and has nine storeys. Visitors can climb its narrow internal staircase to the top.
It is made of red sandstone and white marble.
It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is covered with carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses, weapons, musical instruments and scenes from the epics.
It is also called "Vishnu Dhwaja".
About Chittorgarh Fort:
- It is one of the largest forts in India, spread over about 700 acres on a hill above the Berach river.
- It was the capital of the Mewar kingdom.
- It saw three famous sieges and "jauhars" (mass self-immolation by Rajput women to avoid capture):
- 1303: by Alauddin Khalji (linked to the legend of Rani Padmini).
- 1535: by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat (Rani Karnavati).
- 1567-68: by the Mughal Emperor Akbar.
- Other monuments inside the fort include the Kirti Stambh ("Tower of Fame"), a 12th-century Jain tower dedicated to Adinath; Rana Kumbha's Palace; Padmini's Palace; and the Meera temple.
- Chittorgarh Fort is part of the "Hill Forts of Rajasthan", a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2013), with Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron, Amber and Jaisalmer forts.
Other victory towers:
- Qutub Minar: Delhi.
- Fateh Burj: Chappar Chiri, Mohali (Punjab), commemorating Banda Singh Bahadur's victory.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Madhya Pradesh has the Gwalior Fort and Sanchi Stupa.
- ✗Gujarat has the Rani ki Vav.
- ✗Uttar Pradesh has the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri.
Quick tip
Remember: Vijay Stambh = Chittorgarh Fort, Rajasthan (built by Rana Kumbha after victory over Mahmud Khalji of Malwa, about 1440; nine storeys); Kirti Stambh = Jain tower in the same fort.
