Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 1576

Detailed Solution

The Battle of Haldighati was fought on 18 June 1576 between the Mughal army of Akbar, led by Raja Man Singh I of Amber and Asaf Khan, and the forces of Maharana Pratap of Mewar.

About the battle:

  • Haldighati is a mountain pass in the Aravalli hills, near Gogunda, in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan.
  • Its name comes from the yellow (turmeric-coloured, "haldi") soil of the area.
  • Maharana Pratap's army included Rajputs, Bhils (under Rana Punja) and Afghan soldiers led by Hakim Khan Sur.
  • The Mughal army was larger and had better equipment.
  • The battle lasted only a few hours.
  • Maharana Pratap fought bravely and attacked Man Singh, who was riding an elephant.
  • He was wounded, and was forced to leave the battlefield.
  • His famous horse, Chetak, carried him to safety but died of its wounds; a memorial to Chetak stands near Haldighati.

Result:

  • The Mughals won the battle, but they could not capture Maharana Pratap.
  • Maharana Pratap continued to resist the Mughals using guerrilla warfare from the hills.
  • By the time of his death, he had recovered much of Mewar, though not Chittor.

About Maharana Pratap:

  • He was born in 1540, the son of Rana Udai Singh.
  • He became the ruler of Mewar in 1572.
  • He refused to accept Mughal authority, unlike many other Rajput rulers.
  • He died in 1597 at Chavand, his capital in the hills.
  • His son Amar Singh I continued the struggle and later made peace with the Mughals.

Historian's description:

  • The historian Badauni, who was present in the Mughal army, described the battle.
  • Colonel James Tod called Haldighati the "Thermopylae of Mewar".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1568 is not the year of this battle.
  • ✗1572 was the year Maharana Pratap became ruler.
  • ✗1597 was the year of his death.

Quick tip

Remember: Battle of Haldighati = 18 June 1576 (Maharana Pratap vs Mughal army under Man Singh; horse Chetak); Pratap died 1597 at Chavand.
