Detailed Solution
The Musamman Burj (also called the Shah Burj) is an octagonal tower inside the Agra Fort, in Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
About the Musamman Burj:
- It was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in white marble.
- It is decorated with beautiful "pietra dura" (inlay work of precious and semi-precious stones), lattice screens and a small fountain.
- Its name "musamman" means "octagonal".
- It overlooks the Yamuna river, and from its balcony, the Taj Mahal can be seen in the distance.
- In 1658, after Aurangzeb defeated his brothers in the war of succession, he imprisoned his father, Shah Jahan, in the Agra Fort.
- Shah Jahan spent the last eight years of his life as a prisoner there, cared for by his daughter Jahanara.
- According to tradition, he spent much of his time at the Musamman Burj, looking at the Taj Mahal, the tomb of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
- He died there on 22 January 1666 and was buried next to Mumtaz Mahal in the Taj Mahal.
About the Agra Fort:
- It was built mainly by Emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573, in red sandstone, on the site of an older fort.
- Later emperors, especially Shah Jahan, added white marble palaces.
- It is crescent-shaped and has walls about 2.5 km long.
- Important buildings inside include the Jahangiri Mahal (built by Akbar), the Khas Mahal, the Diwan-i-Aam, the Diwan-i-Khas, the Sheesh Mahal and the Moti Masjid.
- In 1666, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was held under house arrest in Agra, and he made his famous escape, reportedly hidden in a fruit basket.
- The Agra Fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, along with the Taj Mahal.
Other Mughal forts:
- Red Fort (Lal Qila), Delhi: built by Shah Jahan (1639-1648) as the fort of his new capital, Shahjahanabad; UNESCO World Heritage Site (2007).
- Lahore Fort: in Pakistan; expanded by Akbar and later Mughals.
