Answer: Option A — Jagar
Detailed Solution
Basanti Devi Bisht (born 1953) is a folk singer from Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. She is known as the first woman to sing Jagar publicly as a professional singer, a tradition that had been performed almost entirely by men. In recognition of her contribution to preserving Uttarakhand's folk heritage, she received the Padma Shri in 2017 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
Jagar is a ritual form of worship found in the Garhwal and Kumaon regions of Uttarakhand. The word comes from "jagna" (to wake up), because the ritual "awakens" a local deity or spirit. A Jagar is usually held at night. The lead singer, called the "jagariya", sings the story of the deity with the help of instruments such as the dhol, damau, thali (a brass plate) and hudka (a small hourglass drum). As the singing builds, a person called the "dangariya" is believed to be possessed by the deity, who then answers people's problems and gives blessings. Jagars are often held to seek relief from illness or misfortune, or to honour local gods such as Golu Devta, Nanda Devi and Narsingh.
Basanti Devi Bisht learned Jagar from her mother and began performing in public later in life. She is especially known for her Jagars of Maa Nanda Devi, and she has helped bring the form to stage performance and recordings.
Other folk forms of Uttarakhand include Chholiya (a sword dance at weddings), Jhora, Chhapeli and Bajuband songs.
