Detailed Solution
Explanation
Bickram Ghosh is a well-known tabla player, percussionist and music composer from Kolkata. He is known both as a classical tabla player and as a pioneer of fusion music, in which he combines Indian rhythms with rock, jazz, electronic and world music.
Bickram Ghosh is the son of the great tabla player Pandit Shankar Ghosh, of the Farukhabad gharana, and the singer Sanjukta Ghosh. He learnt the tabla from his father from a young age. As a classical musician, he has accompanied many great artists, including Pandit Ravi Shankar, with whom he toured the world for many years. He is also known for his own bands and fusion projects, such as "Rhythmscape", which bring together Indian and Western instruments and styles. He has composed music for films, especially in Bengali, and has received awards for his film music. He has also worked with international musicians and has appeared in collaborations nominated for international awards.
The tabla is the most popular percussion instrument of Hindustani music. It is a pair of drums: the dayan (right-hand drum, made of wood) and the bayan (left-hand drum, usually made of metal). It is used to accompany vocal and instrumental music and dance, and it is also played solo. There are six main gharanas of tabla: Delhi, Ajrara, Lucknow, Farukhabad, Benaras and Punjab. The Farukhabad gharana, to which Bickram Ghosh's family belongs, is known for its rich variety of compositions.
Famous tabla players include Ustad Allah Rakha, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Kishan Maharaj, Pandit Samta Prasad, Pandit Shankar Ghosh, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and Pandit Anindo Chatterjee.
