Lata Mangeshkar, the legendary playback singer, was born on 28 September 1929 in Indore, in present-day Madhya Pradesh. She died on 6 February 2022 in Mumbai, at the age of 92.
Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest child of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a classical singer and theatre actor, and his wife Shevanti. Her breakthrough came with the song "Aayega Aanewala" from the film "Mahal" (1949). Over a career of more than 70 years, she sang thousands of songs in more than 30 languages and became the most famous voice of Hindi cinema. She is often called the "Nightingale of India", "Melody Queen" and "Swara Kokila". Her patriotic song "Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon" (1963) is one of the most famous songs in India. She received the Padma Bhushan (1969), the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1989), the Padma Vibhushan (1999) and the Bharat Ratna (2001), and France made her an Officer of the Legion of Honour (2009). The Government of Madhya Pradesh instituted the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 1984 in her honour.
