Answer: Option B — Marathi
Detailed Solution
Explanation
Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first playback song for the Marathi film "Kiti Hasaal" in 1942, when she was 13 years old. The song was "Naachu Ya Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari", composed by Sadashivrao Nevrekar. However, the song was cut from the final version of the film.
Lata Mangeshkar was born in Indore on 28 September 1929, the eldest child of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a classical singer and theatre actor. Her father died in 1942, when she was 13, and she had to start working as an actress and singer to support her family. With the help of Master Vinayak, a family friend and film producer, she acted and sang in several Marathi and Hindi films in the 1940s. She moved to Mumbai in 1945, where she continued to learn classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan of the Bhendi Bazaar gharana and others. Her first major success in Hindi cinema came with the song "Aayega Aanewala" from the film "Mahal" (1949), composed by Khemchand Prakash. After this, she became the leading playback singer of Hindi cinema, working with almost every major composer for the next seven decades. She sang thousands of songs in more than 30 languages and was known as the "Nightingale of India" and the "Melody Queen". She received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1989) and the Bharat Ratna (2001), and she died in Mumbai on 6 February 2022.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Hindi is the language in which Lata Mangeshkar became most famous, but her first playback song was for a Marathi film.
- ✗Bengali and Gujarati are languages in which she sang many songs later in her career, but not her first.
