Papanasam Sivan, often called the 'Tamil Tyagaraja', was related to which form of music?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Carnatic music

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Papanasam Sivan (1890-1973) was a composer and singer of Carnatic music, the classical music of South India. He is often called the "Tamil Tyagaraja" because he composed a large number of devotional songs (kritis) in Tamil, just as the great composer Tyagaraja had composed kritis in Telugu.

Papanasam Sivan was born as Ramaiya in a village in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, and he grew up in Papanasam, near Tirunelveli, from which he took his name. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, and his devotion earned him the name "Sivan". He learnt music by singing at temples and in bhajan groups, and he composed hundreds of songs, mostly in Tamil, as well as in Sanskrit and Malayalam. His songs, such as "Ennathavam Seithanai", "Kapali" and "Narayana Divya Namam", are still popular in Carnatic concerts. In the 1930s and 1940s, he also became a successful composer, singer and actor in Tamil cinema, and he composed music for many early Tamil films, which helped bring Carnatic music to a wide audience. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1962) and the Sangita Kalanidhi from the Madras Music Academy.

Carnatic music is based on ragas and talas and is mostly devotional. Its greatest composers include Purandara Dasa (the "Father of Carnatic Music") and the Trinity of Carnatic music: Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri. Its famous singers include M.S. Subbulakshmi, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, M. Balamuralikrishna, D.K. Pattammal and M.L. Vasanthakumari.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Hindustani music is the classical music of North India.
  • ✗Sufi music is the devotional music of the Sufi tradition, such as qawwali.
  • ✗Rabindra Sangeet is the body of songs composed by Rabindranath Tagore.
