Answer: Option B — Tansen
Detailed Solution
Raga Miyan Ki Malhar is a Hindustani classical raga of the monsoon (rainy season). It is credited to Miyan Tansen (about 1500-1586), the great musician of Emperor Akbar's court and one of the Navaratnas (nine jewels) of Akbar. The word "Miyan" in the raga's name refers to Tansen, and several ragas named after him carry this prefix.
Ragas credited to Tansen include:
- Miyan ki Malhar (a monsoon raga).
- Miyan ki Todi (a morning raga).
- Miyan ki Sarang (a midday raga).
- Darbari Kanada (a night raga, so called because it was sung in Akbar's darbar, or court).
The Malhar family of ragas is associated with rain. According to a well-known legend, Tansen once sang Raga Deepak, which made his body burn with heat. He was cured when two women, often named Tana and Riri, sang Raga Malhar and brought rain. Miyan ki Malhar is sung during the monsoon months and is known for its use of both the komal (flat) and shuddha (natural) forms of the note Ni.
About Tansen:
- His original name was Ramtanu Pandey; he was born near Gwalior.
- He learnt music from Swami Haridas of Vrindavan and was influenced by the Sufi saint Muhammad Ghaus of Gwalior.
- Before joining Akbar's court, he was a court singer of Raja Ramchandra of Rewa.
- He was a master of Dhrupad, and he wrote the treatise "Sangeet Saar".
- His tomb is in Gwalior, where the Tansen Sangeet Samaroh is held every December.
