Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Hindustani classical music

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Shubha Mudgal, born in 1959 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), is a well-known singer of Hindustani classical music, especially khayal, thumri and dadra. She is also known for her work in popular music and for her efforts to bring classical music to new audiences.

Shubha Mudgal trained in Hindustani classical music under several gurus, including Pandit Ramashreya Jha, Pandit Vinay Chandra Maudgalya, Pandit Vasant Thakar, Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki and Naina Devi, who taught her thumri. She became known as a powerful classical singer with a rich, expressive voice. In the late 1990s, she also became famous in popular music with songs such as "Ab Ke Sawan" and "Mann Ke Manjeere", and she sang for Hindi films such as "Chameli" and "Dance Like a Man". She has composed music for theatre and films and has worked to support musicians through initiatives that help independent artists. Along with her husband, the tabla player Aneesh Pradhan, she has written and spoken widely about the history and economics of Indian music. She received the Padma Shri in 2000.

Hindustani classical music is the classical music tradition of North India. Its main vocal forms include dhrupad (the oldest), khayal (the most popular today), thumri, dadra, tappa and ghazal. It is organised into gharanas, such as Gwalior, Agra, Kirana, Jaipur-Atrauli, Patiala and Mewati.

Why not the other options?

Carnatic classical music is the classical music of South India, linked with singers such as M.S. Subbulakshmi and Bombay Jayashri.

Rabindra Sangeet is the body of songs composed by Rabindranath Tagore.

Baul music is the music of the wandering mystic minstrels of Bengal, linked with Lalon Fakir.
