Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option A — 1926
Detailed Solution
The Prayag Sangeet Samiti was established in 1926 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the oldest institutions in India for the teaching, examination and promotion of Indian classical music and dance.
The Samiti is best known for its examination system. It conducts graded examinations in vocal music, instrumental music (such as sitar, tabla, harmonium, violin and flute) and dance (such as Kathak and Bharatanatyam) through thousands of affiliated centres across India and abroad. Its well-known qualifications include:
Sangeet Prabhakar, considered equal to a bachelor's degree in music.
Sangeet Praveen, considered equal to a master's degree.
Many students of music, especially those who do not study in a university, take these examinations. The Samiti also organises music conferences and the annual "All India Music Conference" and publishes books on music theory.
In the early 20th century, several institutions were set up to bring classical music, which had been confined to royal courts and hereditary musicians, to ordinary people. The two pioneers of this movement were:
Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, who founded the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Lahore in 1901, which later grew into the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal.
Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, who started the Marris College of Music in Lucknow in 1926 (now the Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya) and created the thaat system and a notation system.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1901 is when Paluskar founded the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Lahore.
- ✗1947 is the year of Indian independence.
- ✗1952 is the year in which the Sangeet Natak Akademi was set up by government resolution (it was inaugurated in 1953).
Quick tip
Remember: Prayag Sangeet Samiti = Allahabad (Prayagraj), 1926, Sangeet Prabhakar exams; Gandharva Mahavidyalaya = Paluskar, Lahore 1901; Bhatkhande = Lucknow.

Music & Musical Instruments — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Music & Musical Instruments, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers Indian classical music, its two main traditions (Hindustani and Carnatic), gharanas, ragas and talas, folk music styles, and the musical instruments of India along with the artists who are famous for playing them. It also includes the four classes of instruments: string (tata), wind (sushira), percussion (avanaddha) and solid (ghana). Exam questions usually pair an instrument with its maestro, such as the sitar with Pandit Ravi Shankar, the shehnai with Ustad Bismillah Khan or the santoor with Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. Other common questions ask about the origin of a gharana, the instrument a folk style uses, or the class an instrument belongs to. Making a two-column list of instruments and artists is the quickest way to revise.
