Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Rampur-Sahaswan gharana

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and Ustad Rashid Khan were two of the best-known singers of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, a gharana of khayal singing named after the princely state of Rampur and the town of Sahaswan, both in present-day Uttar Pradesh.

The Rampur-Sahaswan gharana was founded by Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan (1849-1919), who was born in Sahaswan, in the Budaun district, and served as a court musician of the Nawab of Rampur. The gharana is closely related to the Gwalior gharana. It is known for its clear and steady notes, its slow and detailed development of the raga, its fast and varied taans, and its skill in the tarana.

Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan (1931-2021) was born in Badaun. He was a great singer and an even more famous teacher. His students included many well-known film singers, such as Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, A.R. Rahman, Hariharan and Sonu Nigam. He received the Padma Shri (1991), the Padma Bhushan (2006) and the Padma Vibhushan (2018).

Ustad Rashid Khan (1968-2024) was also born in Badaun. He was a great-grandson of Inayat Hussain Khan and was trained mainly by his grandfather, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan, at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata. He became one of the leading khayal singers of his generation, known for his rich voice and his deep, slow elaboration of ragas. He also sang for films, including the song "Aaoge Jab Tum" in "Jab We Met" (2007). He received the Padma Shri (2006) and the Padma Bhushan (2022).
