Answer: Option A — Surbahar
Detailed Solution
Explanation
Ustad Imrat Khan (1935-2018) was a renowned player of both the sitar and the surbahar. He belonged to the Imdadkhani (Etawah) gharana and was the younger brother of the great sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan.
Imrat Khan was born in Kolkata into a family that has been famous for the sitar and surbahar for several generations. His father, Ustad Inayat Khan, and his grandfather, Ustad Imdad Khan, were great masters of both instruments. After his father's early death in 1938, he was trained by his mother's family and by his elder brother, Vilayat Khan, with whom he performed many famous duets. He became especially famous as a master of the surbahar, on which he played long, slow and meditative alaps in the dhrupad style. He taught for many years in India and abroad, especially in the United States and the United Kingdom, and his sons, Nishat Khan, Irshad Khan, Wajahat Khan and Shafaatullah Khan, are well-known musicians. In 2017, he was offered the Padma Shri but declined it, saying that the honour had come too late in his career.
The surbahar, also called the bass sitar, is a large, deep-toned plucked string instrument. It has a larger gourd, a wider neck and thicker strings than the sitar, and it produces a deep, rich sound. It was developed in the 19th century, and it is especially suited to the slow alap, jor and jhala in the style of dhrupad. Annapurna Devi was another great master of the surbahar.
The Imdadkhani gharana is known for the "gayaki ang", in which the sitar imitates the human voice. Its famous players include Imdad Khan, Inayat Khan, Vilayat Khan, Imrat Khan, Shahid Parvez and Shujaat Khan.
