Who holds the Guinness World Record for singing the highest number of songs (28) in one day?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Kumar Sanu

Detailed Solution

Explanation

The playback singer Kumar Sanu entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 1993 for recording 28 songs in a single day. He is one of the most successful playback singers of Hindi cinema, especially of the 1990s.

Kumar Sanu was born as Kedarnath Bhattacharya on 20 September 1957 in Kolkata. His father was a singer and composer, and he learnt music from him. He started his career singing in Kolkata and moved to Mumbai in the 1980s. His big break came with the film "Aashiqui" (1990), whose songs, composed by Nadeem-Shravan, became huge hits. Through the 1990s, he became the leading male playback singer of Hindi cinema. His famous songs include "Ek Ladki Ko Dekha" ("1942: A Love Story"), "Tujhe Dekha To" ("Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge"), "Chura Ke Dil Mera" ("Main Khiladi Tu Anari") and "Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Pagal Hai" ("Saajan"). His singing style was influenced by the legendary singer Kishore Kumar. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer five years in a row, from 1990 to 1994, which is a record. He received the Padma Shri in 2009.

Other Indian singers in the Guinness World Records include Asha Bhosle, who was recognised in 2011 as the most recorded artist in music history.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Udit Narayan is a famous playback singer of Hindi cinema who received the Padma Shri (2009) and the Padma Bhushan (2016), but he does not hold this record.
  • ✗Sonu Nigam is a famous playback singer of Hindi cinema who received the Padma Shri (2022).
  • ✗Kishore Kumar was a legendary playback singer and actor, who won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer eight times.

💡 Exam tip

Link Kumar Sanu with the Guinness World Record for 28 songs in a day (1993), five consecutive Filmfare Awards (1990-1994) and the film "Aashiqui" (1990). Link Asha Bhosle with the record for the most recorded artist (2011).

This topic covers Indian classical music, its two main traditions (Hindustani and Carnatic), gharanas, ragas and talas, folk music styles, and the musical instruments of India along with the artists who are famous for playing them. It also includes the four classes of instruments: string (tata), wind (sushira), percussion (avanaddha) and solid (ghana). Exam questions usually pair an instrument with its maestro, such as the sitar with Pandit Ravi Shankar, the shehnai with Ustad Bismillah Khan or the santoor with Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. Other common questions ask about the origin of a gharana, the instrument a folk style uses, or the class an instrument belongs to.
