Answer: Option D — Violinist

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999) was one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. He is especially remembered in India for his friendship and musical collaboration with Pandit Ravi Shankar, which helped introduce Indian classical music to Western audiences.

Yehudi Menuhin was born in New York, United States, to Jewish parents of Russian origin. He was a child prodigy who began performing in public at the age of seven and became famous across the world as a teenager. Over a long career, he performed the great works of Western classical music and worked as a conductor and teacher. He later became a British citizen and was given the title of Lord Menuhin. He founded the Yehudi Menuhin School, a school for musically gifted children in England.

Menuhin was deeply interested in Indian music, philosophy and yoga. He first visited India in 1952 and met Ravi Shankar, and the two became close friends. Together they recorded the albums "West Meets East" (1966 onwards), in which they played together, combining the violin and the sitar. The first album won a Grammy Award in 1967. They also performed together at concerts and festivals. Menuhin was a student of the yoga teacher B.K.S. Iyengar, whom he helped to make famous in the West. He received the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding for his work in promoting friendship and understanding between cultures.

Other Western musicians who worked with Indian musicians include George Harrison of the Beatles (with Ravi Shankar), John McLaughlin (with Zakir Hussain in the band Shakti) and the composer Philip Glass (with Ravi Shankar).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Pianist: Menuhin was a violinist, not a pianist.
  • ✗Guitarist: George Harrison was the guitarist who learnt the sitar from Ravi Shankar.
  • ✗Cellist: the cello is a larger bowed instrument; Menuhin played the violin.

💡 Exam tip

Link Yehudi Menuhin with the violin, Ravi Shankar, the album "West Meets East" and the yoga teacher B.K.S. Iyengar.
