Which is the only ocean named after a country?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option B — Indian Ocean
Detailed Solution
The Indian Ocean is the only ocean in the world named after a country, India. This reflects India's central position in the ocean and its long history of maritime trade and cultural links with lands around it. In ancient Sanskrit texts, it was called "Ratnakara", meaning "the mine of gems", and it was also known as "Hind Mahasagar".
The Indian Ocean is the third-largest ocean, covering about 70 million square kilometres, about 20% of the Earth's water surface. It is bounded by Asia to the north, Africa to the west, Australia to the east and the Southern Ocean (Antarctica) to the south. Unlike the Pacific and Atlantic, it is closed on the north by the Asian landmass, which strongly influences its winds and currents. This gives rise to the monsoon system: the ocean's currents in the north reverse their direction with the seasons, following the monsoon winds.
The Indian Ocean's deepest point is the Java Trench (Sunda Trench), about 7,200-7,450 metres deep.
Important seas and bays of the Indian Ocean include the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal (the largest bay in the world), the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Aden and the Andaman Sea.
The Indian Ocean is very important for world trade, as major sea routes carrying oil from the Persian Gulf to East Asia and Europe pass through it. Key "choke points" include the Strait of Hormuz, Bab-el-Mandeb and the Strait of Malacca. India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep lie in the Indian Ocean.
India promotes regional cooperation through initiatives such as SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region, 2015), upgraded to MAHASAGAR in 2025, and through the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). The Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004, caused by an earthquake off Sumatra, killed over 2 lakh people.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Atlantic Ocean is named after Atlas, a figure in Greek mythology.
- ✗The Pacific Ocean was named by Magellan, meaning "peaceful".
- ✗The Arctic Ocean is named after the Greek word "arktos", meaning "bear", referring to the northern constellation.
Quick tip
Remember: Indian Ocean = only ocean named after a country, third largest, monsoon-driven currents, deepest point Java (Sunda) Trench; Bay of Bengal = largest bay; SAGAR (2015).

Oceans & Hydrosphere — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Oceans & Hydrosphere, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers the hydrosphere: the oceans and seas of the world, ocean relief features such as trenches and ridges, ocean currents, tides, waves, salinity, and the world's major lakes, straits, gulfs and islands. Questions commonly ask about the largest and deepest ocean (the Pacific, with the Mariana Trench), warm and cold ocean currents, the causes of tides, and which water bodies a strait connects. For example, the Palk Strait separates India and Sri Lanka, and the Strait of Gibraltar connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Practise the oceans and hydrosphere questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
