Answer: Option C — Nairobi, Kenya
Detailed Solution
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global authority on the environment within the UN system. It was set up in 1972, following the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm, Sweden, from 5 to 16 June 1972. This was the first major international conference on environmental issues. Its opening day, 5 June, is celebrated every year as World Environment Day, coordinated by UNEP since 1974.
UNEP's headquarters is in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. It was the first UN agency to be headquartered in a developing country, and in Africa. UN-Habitat (the UN Human Settlements Programme) is also based in Nairobi.
UNEP's main functions are to:
- Assess global, regional and national environmental conditions and trends, through reports such as the Global Environment Outlook and the annual Emissions Gap Report.
- Develop international environmental agreements and help countries implement them.
- Strengthen institutions for the wise management of the environment.
UNEP has played a key role in many important environmental agreements, including:
- The Vienna Convention (1985) and the Montreal Protocol (1987) on the ozone layer; UNEP hosts their Ozone Secretariat.
- The Convention on Biological Diversity (1992).
- The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES, 1973).
- The Basel Convention on hazardous wastes (1989).
- The Minamata Convention on mercury (2013).
- Together with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), UNEP set up the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1988.
The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), the world's highest-level decision-making body on the environment, meets in Nairobi. India hosted World Environment Day in 2011 and 2018 (theme: "Beat Plastic Pollution").
Why not the other options?
- ✗Geneva hosts the WHO, WMO and ILO.
- ✗New York hosts the UN headquarters and UNICEF.
- ✗Rome hosts the FAO, IFAD and WFP.
Quick tip
Remember: UNEP = set up 1972 after the Stockholm Conference, headquarters Nairobi (Kenya); World Environment Day = 5 June; IPCC = 1988 (UNEP + WMO).

Membership and leadership change over time, so pair the static facts here with current affairs for recent changes such as new members or new heads. Practise the organisations and headquarters questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
