Answer: Option D — Doab
Detailed Solution
A doab is the stretch of land lying between two converging, or confluent, rivers. The word comes from Persian: "do" (two) and "ab" (water or river).
Features of doabs:
- Doabs are formed by the alluvial deposits of the two rivers, so they are generally very fertile.
- They are well suited for agriculture and are often densely populated.
The Ganga-Yamuna Doab:
- The most famous doab in India is the Ganga-Yamuna Doab, the land between the Ganga and the Yamuna in western Uttar Pradesh.
- It is one of the most fertile and productive agricultural regions of India, growing wheat, sugarcane, rice and other crops.
- It was the heartland of many ancient and medieval kingdoms.
Doabs of the Punjab:
The Punjab region is divided into doabs by its five rivers. Their names combine the first letters of the two rivers:
Bist Doab (Jalandhar Doab): between the Beas and the Sutlej.
Bari Doab: between the Beas and the Ravi; Amritsar and Lahore lie here.
Rechna Doab: between the Ravi and the Chenab.
Chaj Doab: between the Chenab and the Jhelum.
Sind Sagar Doab: between the Jhelum (and Chenab) and the Indus.
The names were given during the reign of Akbar, by his minister Raja Todar Mal, according to one tradition.
Raichur Doab:
- In the Deccan, the Raichur Doab lies between the Krishna and its tributary, the Tungabhadra.
- It was the scene of long wars between the Vijayanagara Empire and the Bahmani Sultanate in the 14th to 16th centuries.
Historical importance:
Because of their fertility and wealth, doabs were often fought over by rival kingdoms.

Physical Features of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Physical Features of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's location and extent, its neighbours and boundary lines, and its physiographic divisions: the Himalayas, the Northern Plains, the Peninsular Plateau, the Indian Desert, the coastal plains and the islands, along with important mountain passes, peaks and hill ranges. Questions often ask which states the Tropic of Cancer passes through, the southernmost point of India (Indira Point), the highest peak in India (Kangchenjunga), and which pass connects which regions. India shares its longest land border with Bangladesh. Learning the Himalayan ranges from north to south (Himadri, Himachal and Shiwaliks) is also useful.
