Which kinds of justice are mentioned in the Preamble of the Constitution of India?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Social, economic and political

Detailed Solution

The Preamble to the Constitution of India lists four objectives that the people of India resolved to secure for all citizens: Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.

The Preamble says the Constitution will secure to all its citizens:

  • JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
  • LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
  • EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;
  • and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation.

The three kinds of justice mean:

Social justice: equal treatment of all citizens without any social distinction based on caste, colour, race, religion, sex and so on; it aims at the removal of privileges for particular sections and the improvement of conditions of backward classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women.

Economic justice: non-discrimination between people on the basis of economic factors; it involves the elimination of glaring inequalities in wealth, income and property.

Political justice: equal political rights for all citizens, equal access to all political offices and an equal voice in the government, as through universal adult franchise.

A combination of social and economic justice is called "distributive justice".

The ideal of justice, social, economic and political, was taken from the Russian Revolution of 1917. The ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity were inspired by the French Revolution (1789).

The Preamble is based on the Objectives Resolution, drafted and moved by Jawaharlal Nehru in the Constituent Assembly on 13 December 1946 and adopted on 22 January 1947. The Preamble was adopted along with the rest of the Constitution on 26 November 1949. N.A. Palkhivala called it the "identity card of the Constitution", and Thakurdas Bhargava called it the "soul of the Constitution".

These ideals are reflected in the Fundamental Rights and the Directive Principles.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Legal and religious are not the kinds of justice mentioned.
  • ✗Cultural and moral are not mentioned as kinds of justice.
  • ✗Judicial and administrative are not mentioned.

Quick tip

Remember: Preamble justice = social, economic and political (from the Russian Revolution); liberty, equality and fraternity (French Revolution); based on Nehru's Objectives Resolution (1946).
