Prepositions Questions with Solutions

A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence, usually in terms of time, place, direction or manner. This topic covers prepositions of time (at, on, in, since, for, during, by), prepositions of place and direction (in, at, on, into, onto, between, among, across, through), and fixed combinations of verbs, nouns and adjectives with prepositions, such as "comply with", "differ from", "afraid of" and "interested in". Most errors come from a few confusing pairs. "Since" is used with a point of time and "for" with a period of time ("since 2020", "for five years"). "Between" is used for two people or things and "among" for more than two. "In" shows position and "into" shows movement. "Beside" means next to, while "besides" means in addition to. Some verbs, such as "discuss", "enter", "reach" and "resemble", take no preposition at all, so "discuss about the plan" is wrong. Because many combinations are fixed, the most reliable approach is to learn them in groups and read them in example sentences. Practise the prepositions questions below. Each solution explains the rule or fixed usage behind the correct answer.
