Answer: Option B — Bengaluru, Karnataka
Detailed Solution
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is located in Bengaluru (Bangalore), Karnataka.
About the IISc:
It was founded in 1909.
It was established through the vision and generosity of the industrialist Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, who planned a research university for India. He was inspired partly by a meeting with Swami Vivekananda in 1893, during a voyage from Japan to the USA, when they discussed the need for scientific research in India.
After Jamsetji's death in 1904, the institute was established with the support of the Tata family, the Government of India and the Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, who donated about 371 acres of land.
Locally, it is still known as the "Tata Institute".
Its first director was the British chemist Morris Travers.
- V. Raman became its first Indian director in 1933.
Other famous scientists associated with it include Homi J. Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai, Satish Dhawan, G. N. Ramachandran and C. N. R. Rao.
It became a deemed university in 1958.
In 2018, it was declared an "Institution of Eminence" by the Government of India.
It is regularly ranked among the top universities and research institutions in India, and it has been ranked first among universities in the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework).
It conducts advanced research and education in science, engineering, design and management.
Other important scientific institutes in Bengaluru:
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters.
