Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Gwalior

Detailed Solution

Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi died fighting the British on 18 June 1858, at Kotah-ki-Serai near Gwalior (Phool Bagh area).

About Rani Lakshmibai:

  • She was born in 1828 (some say 1835) at Varanasi; her childhood name was Manikarnika ("Manu").
  • She was married to Raja Gangadhar Rao of Jhansi.
  • After the death of her husband in 1853, the Company refused to recognise her adopted son, Damodar Rao, as the heir, and annexed Jhansi under the Doctrine of Lapse.
  • She was given a pension, which she refused at first; she appealed against the annexation, but without success.

Her role in the Revolt:

  • In 1857, she took control of Jhansi after the sepoys there revolted.
  • She defended Jhansi bravely when the British besieged it in 1858.
  • When the fort fell, she escaped on horseback with her adopted son tied to her back, according to popular tradition.
  • She went to Kalpi and joined other rebel leaders.
  • The rebels then captured the fort of Gwalior, whose ruler, the Scindia, had remained loyal to the British.

Her death:

  • The British attacked Gwalior, and she died fighting, dressed as a soldier, on 18 June 1858.
  • A British officer is said to have called her "the bravest and best military leader of the rebels".

Her memory:

  • She became a symbol of courage and resistance.
  • The poem "Jhansi ki Rani" by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan ("Khub ladi mardani woh to Jhansi wali rani thi") made her a household name.
  • The women's regiment of Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army was named the "Rani of Jhansi Regiment".
  • Her companion Jhalkari Bai, who resembled her, also fought bravely.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Jhansi was her kingdom, and Kalpi was a rebel base; she did not die at either place or at Kanpur.

Quick tip

Remember: Rani Lakshmibai = died fighting near Gwalior, 18 June 1858 (childhood name Manikarnika; adopted son Damodar Rao; "Rani of Jhansi Regiment" of the INA).
