Answer: Option B — Telangana
Detailed Solution
Himayat Sagar is an artificial reservoir about 20 km south-west of Hyderabad, in Telangana. It was built across the Esi (Isa) river, a tributary of the Musi.
History:
In 1908, the Musi river caused a catastrophic flood in Hyderabad, killing thousands of people and destroying many homes.
After the flood, the Nizam's government asked the engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya to suggest flood-control measures. He recommended building reservoirs upstream of the city.
Two reservoirs were built:
- Osman Sagar (Gandipet), on the Musi, completed in about 1920.
- Himayat Sagar, on the Esi, completed in about 1927.
They were built during the reign of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad. Himayat Sagar is named after his son, Azam Jah, whose title was Himayat Ali Khan.
Purpose and importance:
- The reservoirs protect Hyderabad from floods.
- For decades, they were the main sources of drinking water for Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
- They are protected by a government order that limits construction in their catchment area, to keep the water clean.
- The lakes attract many migratory birds and are popular picnic spots.
Other lakes of Hyderabad:
Hussain Sagar is a heart-shaped artificial lake built in 1562 during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah. It connects Hyderabad and Secunderabad, and a large monolithic statue of the Buddha stands on the Gibraltar Rock in the middle of the lake.
Durgam Cheruvu is known for its cable-stayed bridge.
About the Musi:
The Musi is a tributary of the Krishna. Hyderabad stands on its banks.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Maharashtra has artificial lakes such as Vihar, Tulsi and Powai in Mumbai.
- ✗Goa has no lake of this name.
- ✗Uttarakhand's lakes are mainly natural Himalayan lakes like Nainital and Bhimtal.
Quick tip
Remember: Himayat Sagar (Esi) and Osman Sagar (Musi) were built after the 1908 Musi flood to protect Hyderabad, Telangana.

The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
