The Almatti Dam, built on the Krishna river, is located in:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Karnataka

Detailed Solution

The Almatti Dam (Lal Bahadur Shastri Dam) is built on the Krishna river in northern Karnataka, on the border of the Vijayapura (Bijapur) and Bagalkot districts.

About the Almatti Dam:

  • It is the main reservoir of the "Upper Krishna Project", a major irrigation project of Karnataka.
  • Its construction began in the 1960s, and the main dam was completed in 2005.
  • Its reservoir is called the "Lal Bahadur Shastri Sagar".
  • It is a gravity dam with a hydroelectric power station of about 290 MW.
  • It irrigates large areas in the drought-prone districts of north Karnataka.
  • Below the dam is a beautiful garden area with fountains and musical gardens, which attracts tourists.
  • The Narayanpur Dam, further downstream on the Krishna, is the other main dam of the Upper Krishna Project.

Water dispute:

  • The height of the Almatti Dam has been a matter of dispute between Karnataka and the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
  • Andhra Pradesh (and later Telangana) feared that raising the height to 524.256 metres would reduce the flow of water downstream.
  • Maharashtra feared flooding in its Sangli and Kolhapur districts during heavy rains.

The Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II (headed by Justice Brijesh Kumar), in its award of 2010 (and further report of 2013), allowed Karnataka to raise the height of the dam. The award has not yet been notified because of ongoing legal disputes.

The first Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal (headed by Justice R. S. Bachawat) gave its award in 1973 (published in 1976).

About the Krishna river:

  • It rises at Mahabaleshwar in the Western Ghats in Maharashtra.
  • It flows through Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and empties into the Bay of Bengal.
  • It is the fourth-largest river in India by basin area.
  • Its main tributaries include the Bhima, Tungabhadra, Ghataprabha, Malaprabha, Koyna and Musi.

Other dams on the Krishna:

  • Srisailam Dam and Nagarjuna Sagar Dam (on the Telangana-Andhra Pradesh border).
  • Prakasam Barrage (Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Maharashtra has the Koyna Dam on a tributary of the Krishna.
  • ✗Andhra Pradesh has the Prakasam Barrage on the Krishna.
  • ✗Telangana shares the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam with Andhra Pradesh.

Quick tip

Remember: Almatti Dam = Krishna river, Karnataka (Upper Krishna Project; Lal Bahadur Shastri Sagar; completed 2005; height dispute with AP and Maharashtra); Krishna rises at Mahabaleshwar.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
