The Bogibeel Bridge, India's longest rail-cum-road bridge, is built over the river:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Brahmaputra

Detailed Solution

The Bogibeel Bridge is built across the Brahmaputra river in Assam, connecting the Dibrugarh district on the south bank with the Dhemaji district on the north bank.

Key facts:

  • Length: about 4.94 km.
  • It is India's longest rail-cum-road bridge and Asia's second longest of its kind.
  • It has a three-lane road on the upper deck and a double-line railway track on the lower deck.
  • It is a fully welded steel-concrete composite bridge, the first of its kind in India, designed to withstand earthquakes of high magnitude, since the region is seismically very active.

History:

The bridge was part of the Assam Accord of 1985.

The foundation stone was laid in 1997 by Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, and work began in 2002 under Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on 25 December 2018, which is celebrated as Good Governance Day, the birth anniversary of Vajpayee.

Importance:

  • It has greatly reduced travel time between Upper Assam and the north bank areas, as well as Arunachal Pradesh.
  • It is strategically important, as it helps move troops and supplies quickly towards the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh.

Other major bridges over the Brahmaputra:

  • Saraighat Bridge in Guwahati (1962), the first road-rail bridge over the Brahmaputra.
  • Kolia Bhomora Setu at Tezpur.
  • Naranarayan Setu between Jogighopa and Pancharatna.
  • Another very long bridge, over a tributary of the Brahmaputra in eastern Assam, is covered in a separate question.

About the Brahmaputra in Assam:

  • The Brahmaputra is very wide in Assam, often several kilometres, and is highly braided.
  • It causes frequent floods and erosion, so building bridges over it is difficult.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Ganga, Narmada and Yamuna do not flow through Assam.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
