Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Narmada

Detailed Solution

The Dhuandhar Falls are on the Narmada river at Bhedaghat, about 30 km from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.

Meaning of the name:

"Dhuandhar" means "smoke cascade". When the Narmada plunges down, the force of the water creates a mist that looks like smoke, giving the falls their name.

Features:

  • The falls are about 30 metres (98 feet) high.
  • The roar of the water can be heard from a distance.
  • A ropeway takes visitors across the falls for a better view.

Marble Rocks of Bhedaghat:

  • Just downstream, the Narmada flows through a narrow gorge about 3 km long, with towering cliffs of white and coloured marble rising up to about 30 metres on both sides.
  • Boat rides through the Marble Rocks, especially on moonlit nights, are a major attraction.
  • The area has been used as a location for several Hindi films.
  • The nearby Chausath Yogini Temple, built in the 10th century by the Kalachuri dynasty, has carvings of 64 yoginis.
  • Bhedaghat has been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status.

Jabalpur:

Jabalpur is an important city on the banks of the Narmada and the headquarters of the Indian Army's Central Command and of the West Central Railway.

Other waterfalls of Madhya Pradesh:

  • Bahuti Falls on the Sellar river (Rewa district), one of the highest in MP.
  • Chachai Falls on the Bihad river (Rewa district).
  • Keoti Falls on the Mahana river (Rewa district).
  • Kapildhara Falls on the Narmada near Amarkantak.
  • Patalpani Falls near Indore.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Tapi, Ken and Tawa do not form the Dhuandhar Falls.

Quick tip

Remember: Dhuandhar Falls ("smoke cascade") = Narmada at Bhedaghat (Jabalpur), next to the Marble Rocks.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
