Answer: Option D — Kaveri
Detailed Solution
The Hogenakkal Falls are located on the Kaveri (Cauvery) river in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu, close to the border with Karnataka. Because of their spread-out, powerful flow, they are often called the "Niagara of India".
Meaning of the name:
"Hogenakkal" comes from Kannada words meaning "smoking rocks", because the force of the water falling on the rocks creates a mist that looks like smoke.
Features of the falls:
- The river falls over carbonatite rocks, which are among the oldest rocks in South Asia and possibly the world.
- The falls are not very high, but they are wide, with many streams and cascades.
- Visitors are taken around in coracles, round boats made of bamboo and covered with hides or plastic, a traditional feature of Hogenakkal.
- The area is also famous for oil massages and fresh fish.
Drinking water project:
The Hogenakkal Integrated Drinking Water Supply and Fluorosis Mitigation Project supplies Kaveri water to the Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts of Tamil Nadu, where groundwater has high fluoride levels.
About the Kaveri:
- It rises in the Western Ghats and flows south-east for about 800 km into the Bay of Bengal.
- It is called the "Dakshina Ganga" in some traditions and is considered sacred.
- Its delta in Tamil Nadu is one of the most fertile rice-growing regions of India.
- Other tributaries of the Kaveri include the Harangi, Hemavati, Shimsha and Arkavathi.
Islands in the Kaveri:
Srirangapatna, Shivanasamudra and Srirangam are river islands formed by the Kaveri.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Krishna, Tungabhadra and Godavari do not form the Hogenakkal Falls.
Quick tip
Remember: Hogenakkal Falls ("smoking rocks") = Kaveri, Dharmapuri (Tamil Nadu); coracle rides; "Niagara of India".

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
