The Nallamala Hills, part of the Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, lie between which two rivers?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Krishna and Penner

Detailed Solution

The Nallamala Hills are a section of the Eastern Ghats lying roughly between the Krishna river in the north and the Penner (Pennar) river in the south, mainly in Andhra Pradesh and partly in Telangana.

Features of the Nallamala Hills:

  • They run roughly north-south for about 430 km.
  • They consist of hard rocks, such as quartzites and slates, of very old age.
  • The highest point is Bhairani Konda (about 1,100 metres).
  • Nallamala means "black hills" in Telugu.

Forests and wildlife:

  • The hills are covered with dry deciduous forests.
  • The Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve (NSTR) in the Nallamala forest is the largest tiger reserve in India by area, extending into Telangana as the Amrabad Tiger Reserve.
  • The forests are home to tigers, leopards, sloth bears and many other animals.
  • The Chenchu tribe, a particularly vulnerable tribal group, lives in these forests and depends on them for their livelihood.

Religious sites:

  • Srisailam, on the Krishna river in the Nallamala Hills, is home to the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and also a Shakti Peetha.
  • Ahobilam, with its Narasimha temples, is also in these hills.

Uranium:

Deposits of uranium have been found in the Nallamala region, and proposals to mine them have been opposed by environmentalists and local communities because of the threat to the tiger reserve and water sources.

The Eastern Ghats:

  • Unlike the continuous Western Ghats, the Eastern Ghats are broken into separate hill ranges by rivers such as the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri.
  • Their sections include the Nallamala, Velikonda, Palkonda, Seshachalam (with Tirumala), Javadi, Shevaroy and Biligirirangan hills.
  • The highest peak of the Eastern Ghats is Jindhagada Peak (about 1,690 metres) in Andhra Pradesh.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Godavari-Krishna, Mahanadi-Godavari and Kaveri-Palar pairs bound other regions.

Quick tip

Remember: Nallamala Hills (Eastern Ghats, AP-Telangana) = between the Krishna and Penner; largest tiger reserve (NSTR); Srisailam Jyotirlinga.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
