Answer: Option A — Karnaprayag
Detailed Solution
The Pindar river meets the Alaknanda at Karnaprayag, in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the five sacred confluences of the Alaknanda, together called the Panch Prayag.
About the Pindar river:
- It rises from the Pindari glacier in the Bageshwar district of the Kumaon Himalayas, between the Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot peaks.
- It flows west through the Kumaon and Garhwal regions to join the Alaknanda at Karnaprayag.
- The Pindari Glacier trek is one of the most popular treks in the Kumaon region.
Karnaprayag:
- It is named after Karna, the warrior of the Mahabharata, who is believed to have meditated here to receive divine armour from his father, Surya (the Sun god).
- A temple dedicated to Uma Devi (Parvati) is one of the important shrines of the town.
- The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project, under construction, will bring railway connectivity to this region.
The Panch Prayag (from upstream to downstream):
- The uppermost confluence is covered in a separate question.
- Nandprayag: Alaknanda meets the Nandakini.
- Karnaprayag: Alaknanda meets the Pindar.
- Rudraprayag: Alaknanda meets the Mandakini.
- Devprayag: Alaknanda meets the Bhagirathi to form the Ganga.
- These confluences are considered sacred, and pilgrims on the way to the Himalayan shrines visit them.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Devprayag is where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet to form the Ganga.
- ✗Rudraprayag is the confluence of the Alaknanda and the Mandakini.
- ✗Nandprayag is the confluence of the Alaknanda and the Nandakini.
Quick tip
Remember: Karnaprayag = Alaknanda + Pindar; Nandprayag = Nandakini; Rudraprayag = Mandakini; Devprayag = Bhagirathi (forms the Ganga).

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
