Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Shipki La pass

Detailed Solution

The Sutlej river enters India from Tibet near the Shipki La pass in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, at a height of about 3,930 metres.

About Shipki La:

  • It is a mountain pass on the India-China border in the Kinnaur district.
  • The Sutlej flows through a deep gorge here as it cuts across the Himalayan ranges.
  • It has been an old trade route between India and Tibet; border trade through it was carried on for many years and has been suspended at times.
  • It is one of the few points where a major Himalayan river crosses into India from Tibet.

Course of the Sutlej:

  • It rises from Lake Rakshastal, near Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash in Tibet, where it is called Langqen Zangbo ("Elephant River").
  • It is older than the Himalayas and kept cutting its valley as the mountains rose.
  • After entering India, it flows south-west through Kinnaur, Shimla and Bilaspur districts of Himachal Pradesh.
  • It enters Punjab near Nangal and flows west, joined by the Beas.
  • It then forms part of the India-Pakistan border before entering Pakistan, where it joins the Chenab to form the Panjnad.
  • Its total length is about 1,450 km, of which about 1,050 km is in India.

Projects on the Sutlej:

  • Bhakra-Nangal, Karcham Wangtoo, Rampur and others.
  • The Indira Gandhi Canal draws water from the Sutlej-Beas system.

Ancient name:

In the Rigveda, the Sutlej was called the Shutudri; the Greeks called it the Zaradros.

Other Himalayan passes:

  • Nathu La (Sikkim): border trade with Tibet.
  • Lipulekh (Uttarakhand): Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route.
  • Karakoram Pass (Ladakh): old Silk Route to Xinjiang.
  • Bara Lacha La (Himachal Pradesh): on the Manali-Leh highway.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Nathu La is in Sikkim.
  • ✗Lipulekh is in Uttarakhand.
  • ✗The Karakoram Pass is in Ladakh.

Quick tip

Remember: Sutlej enters India at Shipki La (Kinnaur, HP); rises from Lake Rakshastal in Tibet.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east. Practise the rivers, lakes and dams of India questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT.
