Answer: Option B — Swami Vivekananda

Detailed Solution

"Prabuddha Bharata" ("Awakened India"), an English monthly journal, was started in July 1896 in Madras (Chennai) with the inspiration and blessings of Swami Vivekananda.

About Prabuddha Bharata:

It was started by a group of young admirers of Swami Vivekananda in Madras, led by B. R. Rajam Iyer, who was its first editor.

Vivekananda gave it its name and encouraged it, as a means to spread the message of Vedanta and the spiritual heritage of India.

After Rajam Iyer's death in 1898, the journal moved to Almora (in the Himalayas), and later to the Mayavati Ashrama (Advaita Ashrama) in the Champawat district of present-day Uttarakhand.

It is now published by the Advaita Ashrama, a branch of the Ramakrishna Order, from Kolkata.

It is one of the oldest English-language journals in India that is still published continuously.

Its content:

  • It publishes articles on Vedanta, Indian philosophy, religion, culture and spiritual life.
  • It has carried writings of Vivekananda and his disciples, and of many scholars.

Other journals associated with the Ramakrishna movement:

  • "Udbodhan": a Bengali journal started by Vivekananda in 1899, still published from Kolkata.
  • "Brahmavadin": an English journal started in Madras in 1895, with Vivekananda's support.

Vivekananda's message:

  • He stressed the unity of all religions, service to humanity as service to God ("Daridra Narayana"), and the revival of India's self-confidence.
  • He wanted to awaken India from its sleep of ignorance and weakness; hence the name "Awakened India".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Dayananda Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj.
  • ✗Sri Aurobindo edited other journals, such as "Arya".
  • ✗Annie Besant was a leader of the Theosophical Society.

Quick tip

Remember: "Prabuddha Bharata" (Awakened India, 1896, Madras; now from Advaita Ashrama) and "Udbodhan" (Bengali, 1899) = journals of Swami Vivekananda's movement.

This question tests your understanding of Socio-Religious Reform Movements, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

In the 19th century, reformers worked to remove social evils and revive Indian society. This topic covers organisations such as the Brahmo Samaj, Arya Samaj, Prarthana Samaj, Ramakrishna Mission, Theosophical Society, Satyashodhak Samaj and the Aligarh Movement, along with their founders and the social reforms they achieved. Questions usually ask who founded an organisation and when, or which reformer is linked to a reform. For example, Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj and campaigned against sati, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar championed widow remarriage, and Jyotiba Phule founded the Satyashodhak Samaj. A table of organisation, founder, year and place covers most questions.
