Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 2014

Detailed Solution

The Telangana Legislative Assembly came into existence in 2014, when Telangana was formed as the 29th state of India on 2 June 2014.

How Telangana was formed:

  • Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, passed by Parliament.
  • The movement for a separate Telangana state had a long history, going back to the 1950s and 1969.
  • Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) led the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which was at the forefront of the statehood movement.

Parliament's power to form new states:

  • Under Article 3, Parliament can form a new state by separating territory from an existing state.
  • A bill for this purpose can be introduced only on the recommendation of the President.
  • The President must refer the bill to the legislature of the affected state for its views, but Parliament is not bound by those views.
  • Such a law is passed by a simple majority and is not considered an amendment under Article 368.

The Telangana Assembly:

  • It has 119 elected members.
  • Chandrashekar Rao became the first Chief Minister of Telangana.
  • Telangana also has a Legislative Council.

Hyderabad as capital:

  • Hyderabad was made the common capital of both states for a period of up to ten years.
  • Andhra Pradesh later developed Amaravati as its capital.

Historical background:

  • The Telangana region was earlier part of the princely state of Hyderabad, ruled by the Nizam.
  • Hyderabad State was integrated into India in 1948 through Operation Polo.
  • In 1956, the Telugu-speaking areas of Hyderabad State were merged with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh.

Present position:

With the later reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir into Union territories, India now has 28 states.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗2011, 2013 and 2016 do not match the year of the formation of Telangana.

Quick tip

Remember: Telangana = 29th state, formed on 2 June 2014 (Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014); Assembly of 119 members.
