Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Madras Mahajana Sabha

Detailed Solution

The Madras Mahajana Sabha was founded in May 1884 by M. Veeraraghavachariar, G. Subramania Iyer and P. Ananda Charlu, in Madras (Chennai).

About the Madras Mahajana Sabha:

It was one of the most important pre-Congress political associations of south India.

It aimed to promote the political education of the people, to represent their grievances to the government, and to work for reforms such as the expansion of the legislative councils, the reduction of taxes, and the Indianisation of the civil services.

It held provincial conferences and brought together leaders from different parts of the Madras Presidency.

Its leaders played an important role in the founding of the Indian National Congress (1885).

About the founders:

  • Subramania Iyer (1855-1916): a journalist who founded the newspaper "The Hindu" (1878), along with M. Veeraraghavachariar and others, and the Tamil newspaper "Swadesamitran" (1882).
  • Veeraraghavachariar: a co-founder of "The Hindu".
  • Ananda Charlu (1843-1908): a lawyer and leader; he was President of the Congress at its Nagpur session (1891).

"The Hindu":

It was founded in 1878 as a weekly by six young men of Madras, led by G. Subramania Iyer and M. Veeraraghavachariar, to protest against the criticism of the appointment of the first Indian judge of the Madras High Court, T. Muthuswami Iyer.

It became a daily in 1889.

It is now one of the leading English newspapers of India.

Earlier association in Madras:

The Madras Native Association was founded in 1852 by Gazulu Lakshminarasu Chetty and others.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Madras Native Association was an earlier body; the Indian Association and the Bombay Presidency Association were in Bengal and Bombay.

Quick tip

Remember: Madras Mahajana Sabha (1884) = M. Veeraraghavachariar, G. Subramania Iyer, P. Ananda Charlu; G. Subramania Iyer also founded "The Hindu" (1878) and "Swadesamitran".
