Most of the hymns (suktas) of the Rigveda are devoted to which god?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Indra

Detailed Solution

Indra is the most important god of the Rigveda, and about 250 hymns, roughly a quarter of all the hymns, are devoted to him.

About Indra in the Rigveda:

  • He is the god of war, thunder and rain, and the king of the gods.
  • He carries the thunderbolt ("vajra") as his weapon.
  • His most famous deed is killing the serpent-demon Vritra, who had held back the waters; by killing Vritra, Indra released the rivers and brought rain.
  • He is called "Purandara" (destroyer of forts), because he is said to have destroyed the forts of enemies.
  • He drinks large amounts of soma, which gives him strength.
  • He is described as a great warrior who helped the Vedic people in battles against their enemies.
  • He is also associated with cattle raids and the release of cows.

Other Rigvedic gods:

  • Agni (fire): the second most important god, with about 200 hymns; he was the messenger between humans and gods, carrying offerings to them.
  • Soma: the god of the sacred drink.
  • Varuna: the guardian of "rita" (cosmic order) and moral law; he punished wrongdoers.
  • Surya and Savitri: gods of the sun.
  • Ushas: the goddess of dawn.
  • Vayu: the god of wind.
  • The Ashvins: twin gods of healing.
  • Maruts: the storm gods, companions of Indra.

Changes in the later Vedic period:

  • Indra and Agni lost some of their importance.
  • Prajapati (the creator) became the chief god.
  • Vishnu and Rudra (later Shiva) became more important.

In later Hinduism:

Indra became a lesser god, the king of heaven (Svarga), but not a supreme deity.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Varuna is important in the Rigveda but has fewer hymns.
  • ✗Vishnu is a minor god in the Rigveda, with only a few hymns.
  • ✗Surya has fewer hymns.

Quick tip

Remember: Indra = most Rigvedic hymns (about 250; god of war, thunder and rain; killer of Vritra; "Purandara"); Agni = second (about 200); Varuna = guardian of rita.
