Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Cataract

Detailed Solution

A cataract is a large, powerful waterfall in which a huge volume of water falls over a steep drop, or a series of steep, violent rapids along a river. The word comes from the Greek "katarraktes", meaning "down-rushing".

Examples of cataracts:

The Nile has six famous cataracts between Khartoum and Aswan. These are stretches of shallow, rocky rapids where the river crosses hard granite rock. They made boat travel difficult in ancient times and served as natural boundaries; the First Cataract at Aswan marked the old southern boundary of Egypt.

Boyoma Falls (formerly Stanley Falls) on the Lualaba (upper Congo) river is a series of seven cataracts and has one of the largest flows of any waterfall.

Khone Falls on the Mekong river in Laos is the widest waterfall in the world and carries a very large volume of water.

Iguazu Falls on the border of Argentina and Brazil is also a cataract-type fall with a huge flow.

Types of waterfalls:

  • Plunge: water falls vertically and loses contact with the rock face.
  • Horsetail: water stays in contact with the rock as it falls.
  • Cascade: water falls in a series of small steps over rocks.
  • Tiered (multi-step): water falls in distinct steps, each with a pool.
  • Block: water falls from a wide stream or river.

How waterfalls form:

Waterfalls usually form where a river flows over a band of hard rock lying above softer rock. The softer rock is worn away faster, creating a step.

They can also form at fault lines, glacial valleys (hanging valleys) and plateau edges.

Over time, waterfalls retreat upstream as the rock is eroded, leaving a gorge below them.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗A cascade is a waterfall falling in a series of small steps.
  • ✗Rapids are stretches of fast, turbulent water over a rocky bed, without a single large drop.
  • ✗A chute is a narrow channel through which water rushes quickly.

Quick tip

Remember: Cataract = huge-volume waterfall or violent rapids (Nile has six); cascade = small steps; rapids = fast water without a big drop.

World Geography — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of World Geography, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers the physical and political geography of the world: continents, major countries, mountain ranges, plateaus, rivers, deserts, grasslands, and the world's important cities, ports and resources. Exams test the longest rivers (the Nile and the Amazon), the highest peaks and the ranges they belong to, the largest deserts, and the local names of grasslands, such as the Prairies, Pampas, Steppes and Veld. Questions on cities located on rivers, such as Baghdad on the Tigris or London on the Thames, are also common.
