Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option A — Venezuela
Detailed Solution
Lake Maracaibo lies in north-western Venezuela, in the state of Zulia. It is connected to the Gulf of Venezuela (part of the Caribbean Sea) by a narrow strait, so its water is brackish (slightly salty), especially in the north.
Key facts about Lake Maracaibo:
It covers about 13,000 square kilometres. It is often described as the largest lake in South America, although, because it is connected to the sea, some geographers call it a bay or lagoon. By that definition, Lake Titicaca is the largest lake of South America.
It is believed to be one of the oldest lakes on Earth, formed millions of years ago in a tectonic depression between branches of the Andes.
The city of Maracaibo, Venezuela's second largest city, stands on the western side of the strait.
The General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge, about 8.7 km long, crosses the strait.
Oil:
The Maracaibo basin is one of the richest oil-producing regions in the world. Oil was discovered here in the early 20th century, and hundreds of oil wells and platforms stand in and around the lake.
Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world, largely in the Orinoco belt and the Maracaibo basin.
Oil spills and leaks from old pipelines have caused serious pollution in the lake.
Catatumbo lightning:
At the mouth of the Catatumbo river, at the south-western end of the lake, a remarkable natural phenomenon called the Catatumbo lightning occurs. Storms produce lightning on many nights of the year, often for hours at a time, making this one of the places with the highest frequency of lightning on Earth.
Name of Venezuela:
According to a popular account, when Spanish explorers in 1499 saw houses built on stilts over the water near the lake, they were reminded of Venice and named the area "Venezuela", meaning "little Venice".
Why not the other options?
- ✗Brazil's large lagoons include Lagoa dos Patos in the south.
- ✗Peru shares Lake Titicaca with Bolivia.
- ✗Chile has lakes such as Lake General Carrera, shared with Argentina.
Quick tip
Remember: Lake Maracaibo = Venezuela (oil-rich, linked to the Caribbean, Catatumbo lightning); Venezuela means "little Venice".

This question tests your understanding of World Geography, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers the physical and political geography of the world: continents, major countries, mountain ranges, plateaus, rivers, deserts, grasslands, and the world's important cities, ports and resources. Exams test the longest rivers (the Nile and the Amazon), the highest peaks and the ranges they belong to, the largest deserts, and the local names of grasslands, such as the Prairies, Pampas, Steppes and Veld. Questions on cities located on rivers, such as Baghdad on the Tigris or London on the Thames, are also common.
