Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Scotland

Detailed Solution

Loch Lomond is a freshwater loch (lake) in the west of Scotland, about 30 km north-west of Glasgow. It is the largest inland body of water in Great Britain by surface area, about 71 square kilometres. "Loch" is the Scottish Gaelic word for a lake or sea inlet.

Key facts about Loch Lomond:

  • It is about 36 km long and up to about 8 km wide.
  • It is about 190 metres deep at its deepest point, in the narrow northern part.

It contains about 30 islands, more than most lakes in Britain. Inchmurrin is the largest freshwater island in the British Isles.

The Highland Boundary Fault, which separates the Scottish Highlands from the Lowlands, crosses the loch. As a result, the northern part is narrow and deep, surrounded by mountains, while the southern part is broad and shallow, with many islands.

The loch was formed by glaciers during the last Ice Age.

Ben Lomond, a popular mountain for climbers, rises on its eastern shore.

National park:

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, established in 2002, was the first national park in Scotland.

Culture:

The loch is celebrated in the traditional Scottish song "The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond".

Other famous lochs of Scotland:

  • Loch Ness is the largest by volume of water in Great Britain and is famous for the legend of the "Loch Ness Monster" (Nessie).
  • Loch Morar is the deepest freshwater body in the British Isles.
  • Loch Awe is the longest freshwater loch in Scotland.

Lakes elsewhere in the British Isles:

  • Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland is the largest lake in the British Isles (and the United Kingdom) by area.
  • Lake Windermere in the Lake District is the largest natural lake in England.
  • Lake Bala (Llyn Tegid) is the largest natural lake in Wales.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Wales has Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake).
  • ✗Ireland's largest lakes include Lough Corrib and Lough Derg.
  • ✗Norway has fjords and lakes such as Mjosa, its largest lake.

Quick tip

Remember: Loch Lomond = largest lake of Great Britain by area (Scotland); Loch Ness = largest by volume; Lough Neagh = largest in the British Isles.
