Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Bangladesh

Detailed Solution

Maitri Setu ("Friendship Bridge") is a bridge over the Feni river that connects Sabroom in north-eastern India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9 March 2021.

Features of the bridge:

  • It is about 1.9 km long.
  • It was built by India's National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) at a cost of about 133 crore rupees.

Importance of the bridge:

  • Sabroom is only about 80 km from the Chittagong (Chattogram) port of Bangladesh.
  • The bridge gives the north-eastern states much quicker access to the sea through Chittagong port.
  • Earlier, goods from the north-east had to travel a long way through the narrow Siliguri Corridor ("Chicken's Neck") to reach ports such as Kolkata.
  • An Integrated Check Post (ICP) is being developed at Sabroom to handle passengers and cargo.

About the Feni river:

  • The Feni river rises in the hills of north-eastern India and flows through Bangladesh into the Bay of Bengal.
  • It forms part of the India-Bangladesh border.
  • India and Bangladesh agreed in 2019 to allow India to draw a small amount of water from the Feni river for drinking water supply to Sabroom.

India-Bangladesh connectivity:

  • Bus services between Kolkata and Dhaka.
  • Inland water transport through the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol route.
  • The Maitree Express (Kolkata-Dhaka) and Bandhan Express (Kolkata-Khulna) trains.

India-Bangladesh relations:

  • India played a key role in the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.
  • The two countries share 54 rivers and the world's fifth longest land border.
  • They resolved their land boundary through the Land Boundary Agreement of 2015.
  • Relations have faced challenges since the change of government in Bangladesh in August 2024.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Feni bridge does not connect India with Myanmar, Nepal or Bhutan.

Quick tip

Remember: Maitri Setu (2021) over the Feni river = Sabroom (India) to Ramgarh (Bangladesh); gives the north-east access to Chittagong port.
