The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic Ocean with the:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Pacific Ocean

Detailed Solution

The Panama Canal is an artificial waterway about 82 km long that cuts across the narrow land of Panama, linking the Atlantic Ocean (through the Caribbean Sea) with the Pacific Ocean.

How the canal works:

  • The canal uses a system of locks that raise ships about 26 metres up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake, and then lower them back to sea level on the other side.
  • The locks are needed because of the hilly land in the middle of the country; it is not a sea-level canal.
  • Fresh water from Gatun Lake is used to operate the locks, so the canal depends on rainfall.

History:

  • France, under Ferdinand de Lesseps (who had built the Suez Canal), began work in 1881 but failed because of tropical diseases such as malaria and yellow fever, landslides and financial problems.
  • The USA took over the project in 1904 and completed the canal.
  • Thousands of workers died during construction.

The USA controlled the Panama Canal Zone for decades. Under the Torrijos-Carter Treaties of 1977, control was transferred to Panama on 31 December 1999.

The Panama Canal Authority now operates it.

Importance:

  • Before the canal, ships travelling between the east and west coasts of the Americas had to go around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America.
  • The canal shortened the voyage between New York and San Francisco by about 13,000 km.
  • It is one of the most important waterways for world trade, used by over 10,000 ships a year.

Expansion:

A new, larger set of locks, opened in 2016, allows much bigger "Neopanamax" ships to pass.

Challenges:

In 2023 and 2024, a severe drought lowered water levels in Gatun Lake, forcing the authority to limit the number and size of ships.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Panama Canal does not connect the Atlantic with the Indian Ocean, the Arctic Ocean or the Mediterranean Sea.

Quick tip

Remember: Panama Canal = Atlantic (Caribbean) to Pacific, uses locks and Gatun Lake; handed over to Panama in 1999.

World Geography — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of World Geography, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers the physical and political geography of the world: continents, major countries, mountain ranges, plateaus, rivers, deserts, grasslands, and the world's important cities, ports and resources. Exams test the longest rivers (the Nile and the Amazon), the highest peaks and the ranges they belong to, the largest deserts, and the local names of grasslands, such as the Prairies, Pampas, Steppes and Veld. Questions on cities located on rivers, such as Baghdad on the Tigris or London on the Thames, are also common. Practise the world geography questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
