Answer: Option C — Sunda Strait
Detailed Solution
The Sunda Strait lies between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. It connects the Java Sea in the north-east with the Indian Ocean in the south-west.
Features of the Sunda Strait:
- It is about 24 km wide at its narrowest point, near its north-eastern end.
- Its waters are shallow at the north-eastern end, with strong currents, sandbanks and many small islands, which make navigation difficult for very large ships.
Krakatoa volcano:
The famous volcano Krakatoa (Krakatau) lies in the Sunda Strait.
Its eruption in August 1883 was one of the most violent volcanic events in recorded history. The explosions were heard nearly 4,800 km away, in Australia and on islands in the Indian Ocean.
The eruption and the giant sea waves it caused killed more than 36,000 people.
A new volcano, Anak Krakatau ("Child of Krakatoa"), emerged from the sea in 1927 and remains active. A partial collapse of Anak Krakatau in December 2018 caused another deadly wave.
Indonesia's geography:
- Indonesia is made up of more than 17,000 islands.
- The main islands include Sumatra, Java, Borneo (Kalimantan, shared with Malaysia and Brunei), Sulawesi and New Guinea (Papua, shared with Papua New Guinea).
- Java is the most populous island in the world, and Jakarta, the present capital, lies on it.
- Indonesia has the largest number of active volcanoes of any country.
Other important straits of South-East Asia:
Strait of Malacca: between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra; one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, connecting the Indian Ocean with the South China Sea.
Lombok Strait: between Bali and Lombok; deeper than the Malacca Strait, used by very large ships. It marks part of the Wallace Line, which separates Asian and Australian animal life.
Makassar Strait: between Borneo and Sulawesi.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Strait of Malacca separates the Malay Peninsula from Sumatra.
- ✗The Lombok Strait lies between Bali and Lombok.
- ✗The Makassar Strait lies between Borneo and Sulawesi.
Quick tip
Remember: Sunda Strait = between Java and Sumatra (Java Sea to Indian Ocean); Krakatoa volcano lies in it.

This question tests your understanding of World Geography, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers the physical and political geography of the world: continents, major countries, mountain ranges, plateaus, rivers, deserts, grasslands, and the world's important cities, ports and resources. Exams test the longest rivers (the Nile and the Amazon), the highest peaks and the ranges they belong to, the largest deserts, and the local names of grasslands, such as the Prairies, Pampas, Steppes and Veld. Questions on cities located on rivers, such as Baghdad on the Tigris or London on the Thames, are also common.
