Victoria Falls, on the Zambezi river, lies on the border between which two countries?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option A — Zambia and Zimbabwe
Detailed Solution
Victoria Falls lies on the Zambezi river in southern Africa, on the border between Zambia (to the north) and Zimbabwe (to the south). Livingstone (Zambia) and Victoria Falls town (Zimbabwe) lie on either side.
Key facts about Victoria Falls:
- It is about 1,708 metres wide and up to about 108 metres high, making it the largest single sheet of falling water in the world, based on its combined width and height.
- The local Kololo (Lozi) name is "Mosi-oa-Tunya", meaning "the smoke that thunders", because its spray rises hundreds of metres and can be seen from far away.
- The Scottish missionary-explorer David Livingstone, said to be the first European to see it, named it after Queen Victoria in 1855.
- It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989, jointly by Zambia and Zimbabwe.
How it formed:
The Zambezi flows over a flat basalt plateau. Water has eroded cracks and joints in the basalt, forming the falls and a series of zigzag gorges below them.
Over time, the falls have moved back upstream, carving these gorges.
Nearby features:
- The Victoria Falls Bridge (opened 1905) crosses the Batoka Gorge just below the falls, linking the two countries.
- "Devil's Pool" is a natural rock pool at the edge of the falls on the Zambian side.
- Lunar rainbows (moonbows) can be seen in the spray at full moon.
About the Zambezi:
- It is the fourth longest river in Africa (about 2,570 km) and the longest east-flowing river of the continent.
- It rises in north-western Zambia, flows through Angola, along the borders of Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and through Mozambique into the Indian Ocean.
- The Kariba Dam (between Zambia and Zimbabwe) and the Cahora Bassa Dam (Mozambique) are on it.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Zambia and Mozambique do not share the falls.
- ✗Zimbabwe and Botswana meet near Kazungula, upstream, but the falls are not there.
- ✗Malawi and Mozambique share Lake Malawi's region, not the falls.
Quick tip
Remember: Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya) = Zambezi, on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border; named by David Livingstone in 1855.

This question tests your understanding of World Geography, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers the physical and political geography of the world: continents, major countries, mountain ranges, plateaus, rivers, deserts, grasslands, and the world's important cities, ports and resources. Exams test the longest rivers (the Nile and the Amazon), the highest peaks and the ranges they belong to, the largest deserts, and the local names of grasslands, such as the Prairies, Pampas, Steppes and Veld. Questions on cities located on rivers, such as Baghdad on the Tigris or London on the Thames, are also common.
