Which river from Afghanistan joins the Indus at Attock in Pakistan?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Kabul River

Detailed Solution

The Kabul river rises in the Sanglakh Range of the Hindu Kush mountains, west of Kabul in Afghanistan. It flows east past Kabul and Jalalabad, enters Pakistan near the Khyber region, flows past Peshawar and Nowshera, and joins the Indus near Attock in Punjab province, Pakistan.

Key facts about the Kabul river:

  • It is about 700 km long.
  • It is the main river of eastern Afghanistan, and Kabul, the capital, stands on its banks.

Its main tributaries include the Panjshir, Logar and Alingar in Afghanistan, and the Kunar (Chitral) and Swat rivers. The Kunar is its largest tributary.

In Pakistan, the Warsak Dam on the Kabul river provides power and irrigation.

At Attock, the clear blue water of the Indus and the muddy water of the Kabul can be seen flowing side by side.

About Attock:

  • The Mughal emperor Akbar built the Attock Fort in 1581-83 on the Indus, at a crossing point on the Grand Trunk Road.
  • Attock has historically been an important crossing between Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent; armies of Alexander, Mahmud of Ghazni, Babur and others crossed the Indus in this region.

The Indus river system:

  • The Indus rises in Tibet near Lake Mansarovar and flows through Ladakh and Gilgit-Baltistan before entering the plains of Pakistan.
  • Its main western (right-bank) tributaries include the Shyok, Gilgit, Kabul, Kurram and Gomal.
  • Its main eastern (left-bank) tributaries are the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej, which together are known as the Panjnad when they join.
  • The Indus enters the Arabian Sea near Karachi.

Other rivers of Afghanistan:

The Helmand is the longest river of Afghanistan. It flows south-west into the Sistan basin on the Iran border and never reaches the sea.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Helmand flows to the Sistan basin, not to the Indus.
  • ✗The Gomal rises in Afghanistan and joins the Indus near Dera Ismail Khan.
  • ✗The Kurram rises in Afghanistan and joins the Indus near Isa Khel, not at Attock.

Quick tip

Remember: Kabul river joins the Indus at Attock (Akbar's fort); Helmand = longest river of Afghanistan, ends in the Sistan basin.
