Which oilseed crop is grown both as a Rabi crop and as a Kharif crop in India?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Castor seed

Detailed Solution

Castor (Ricinus communis) is an oilseed crop that is grown in India in both seasons. It is sown as a kharif crop in many areas and as a rabi crop in others, especially under irrigation. Because of this, it is often cited as an example of an oilseed grown in both rabi and kharif seasons.

Castor in India:

  • India is the world's largest producer and exporter of castor seed and castor oil, supplying the majority of the world's castor oil.
  • Gujarat is by far the largest producer, accounting for most of India's output, especially from north Gujarat (Banaskantha, Mehsana and Patan districts).
  • Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh (along with Telangana) are other important producers.

Uses of castor oil:

Industrial uses: lubricants (including for aircraft and high-performance engines), hydraulic fluids, paints, varnishes, inks, soaps, plastics, nylon-11 and biodiesel. It does not freeze easily, which makes it useful in cold conditions.

Medicinal use: as a laxative.

Cosmetics and hair products.

The leftover cake after oil extraction is used as organic manure.

Toxicity:

Castor seeds contain ricin, a highly poisonous protein. It is removed or destroyed during oil processing, so castor oil is safe for use, but the raw seeds must not be eaten.

Seasonal classification of oilseeds:

  • Kharif oilseeds: groundnut (mainly), soybean, niger and castor.
  • Rabi oilseeds: rapeseed and mustard, linseed, safflower and sunflower (in some areas).

Oilseeds in India:

  • India is one of the largest producers of oilseeds in the world, but it still imports a large share of its edible oil, mainly palm, soybean and sunflower oil.
  • The National Mission on Edible Oils (Oil Palm), launched in 2021, aims to raise domestic edible oil production.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Mustard is a rabi crop grown mainly in Rajasthan and the northern plains.
  • ✗Soybean is a kharif crop.
  • ✗Linseed is a rabi oilseed crop.

Quick tip

Remember: Castor = grown in both rabi and kharif; India is the largest producer and exporter; Gujarat leads; seeds contain toxic ricin.
