Answer: Option A — Jagjit Singh
Detailed Solution
Explanation
"The Unforgettables" was an album of ghazals released in 1976 by Jagjit Singh, together with his wife Chitra Singh. It became one of the best-selling ghazal albums of its time and helped bring the ghazal to a wide new audience.
Before "The Unforgettables", the ghazal in India was mostly heard in a heavy, classical style, sung by masters such as Begum Akhtar and Mehdi Hassan, and enjoyed mainly by connoisseurs of Urdu poetry. Jagjit Singh changed this. He chose simple, meaningful poetry, used a lighter style of singing, and added Western instruments, such as the guitar and the violin, to the traditional harmonium and tabla. As a result, ordinary listeners, especially young people, began to enjoy ghazals. This is why he is called the "Ghazal King" and is credited with reviving the ghazal in the 1970s and 1980s.
Jagjit Singh (1941-2011) was born in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Some of his best-known works are the album "Marasim", the songs of the television serial "Mirza Ghalib" (1988), and film songs such as "Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho" from "Arth" (1982). He sang the poetry of Ghalib, Faiz, Nida Fazli and Gulzar, among others. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2003.
