Which of the following best describes the climatic region known as the Mediterranean climate?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters caused by the shifting influence of westerlies and subtropical highs.

Detailed Solution

The Mediterranean climate (about 30 to 45 degrees latitude, on western sides of continents) has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

In summer the subtropical high-pressure belt shifts poleward and brings dry, sinking air; in winter it shifts back and the rain-bearing westerlies reach the region.

Option (B) describes the monsoon climate and option (C) the equatorial climate.
