The Moortidevi Award, an Indian literary award, is presented annually by:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Bharatiya Jnanpith

Detailed Solution

Explanation

The Moortidevi Award is a literary award presented every year by the Bharatiya Jnanpith, the same organisation that gives the Jnanpith Award, India's highest literary honour. It was instituted in 1983.

The Moortidevi Award is named after Moortidevi, the mother of Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain, the industrialist who founded the Bharatiya Jnanpith together with his wife, Rama Jain. It is given for a book, in any Indian language, that deals with Indian philosophy, culture, values and the spiritual and moral heritage of India. It is therefore different from the Jnanpith Award, which is given for an author's overall contribution to literature.

The Bharatiya Jnanpith was founded in 1944 and is based in New Delhi. It is a literary and cultural trust that publishes books and encourages research in Indian languages. Its most famous award, the Jnanpith Award, was first given in 1965 to the Malayalam poet G. Sankara Kurup. Other recipients of the Jnanpith include Ashapoorna Devi (the first woman, 1976) and Amitav Ghosh (the first writer in English, 2018).

India has several other important literary bodies and awards:

The Sahitya Akademi, set up in 1954, gives the Sahitya Akademi Award in 24 languages.

The K.K. Birla Foundation gives the Saraswati Samman, the Vyas Samman and the Bihari Puraskar.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Sahitya Akademi is India's National Academy of Letters, which gives the Sahitya Akademi Award and Fellowship.

K.K. Birla Foundation gives the Saraswati Samman, the Vyas Samman and the Bihari Puraskar.

Sangeet Natak Akademi is the national academy for music, dance and drama.

💡 Exam tip

Link both the Jnanpith Award and the Moortidevi Award with the Bharatiya Jnanpith. The Moortidevi Award honours writing on Indian philosophy and culture.
